The first test in qualifying is the ADI part 1 also known as the  driving instructor theory test. This is a computer based theory test like the one for the learner’s you’ll soon be teaching. It is split into 2 sections one multiple choice theory based questions and the other is a hazard perception.

Multiple choice for driving instructor theory test

The multiple choice is split into 4 sections on each with 25 questions totalling 100 questions. You must score at least 20/25 in each section and an overall score of at least 85. The sections are as follows;

  • road procedure
  • traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge
  • driving test, disabilities, and the law
  • publications and instructional techniques

Driving instructors Hazard perception test

The second phase of the driving instructor theory test is the hazard perception. In this test you must click when you see the hazard with the score gradually decreasing the longer it takes you to spot the hazard, with 5 being the highest and 0 the lowest. 13 clips will be worth a maximum of 5 points and 1 clip will have to developing hazards and be worth 10 points. You must score at least 57 out of 75.This test is the same as the learner drivers test, but the pass mark required is higher. You can take the test as many times as you need, but if you prepare properly and spend some time studying, you should be looking at passing this test on the first attempt. After you have passed you can then move on to the part 2 test of driving ability. If you are in a hurry or want to take the fast track to becoming a driving instructor, then there is no reason why you can not train for the part 2 test while you are studying for the part 1.
