Approved Driving Instructor Qualification criteria and process

You will first of all have to register with the DVSA (Driver and vehicle Standard Agency.) To do this you must have

  • Held your full licence for at least 3 years.
  • Be 21 years old or over
  • No more than 5 penalty points on your licence.
  • You will need to demonstrate that you are able to read a car number plate from 27.5 metres, with glasses or contact lenses if needed.

CRB Background Check

You will be required to undergo a CRB (criminal records bureau) check. Any convictions will be taken into account. You will need to take and pass the 3 qualifying tests which consist of;

  • Part one- Theory test
  • Part two – Driving ability test
  • Part three – Ability to instruct

Although this may seem quite complicated, it really is not, and with the right guidance and training it is possible to complete the training in less than 6 months. Once you have completed your training, and passed the tests you will be a fully qualified instructor.
