Level 2: Core Skills

Emerging at Junctions

Mastering the LADA routine and safely joining a major road from a minor one.

The LADA Routine

As you approach the junction line, you should follow this cycle:

  • 👀 Look: Scan Right-Left-Right as early as possible.
  • 🤔 Assess: How fast are the cars moving? Is there a gap?
  • 💡 Decide: Is it safe to go, or do I need to stop?
  • Act: Move off smoothly or wait at the line.

Dealing with "Closed" Junctions

A junction is "closed" when your view is blocked by walls, hedges, or parked cars. Use the Peep-and-Creep method:

The Setup

Stay in 1st gear. Bring the clutch to the biting point and keep your feet very still.

The Creep

Use clutch control to edge forward slowly until you can see clearly.

Turning the Wheel Too Early

Wait until the front of your car is at the junction line before you start steering. Turning early can cause you to clip the kerb or cut the corner.

Staring Only in One Direction

Learners often stare to the right. Remember, traffic from the left can also be a hazard, especially if they are overtaking or if you are turning right.
