Moving Off: The POM Routine
P Prepare
Get the car ready to move. This should be done before you look around.
- 1. Clutch down & select 1st Gear.
- 2. Set the gas (a gentle hum).
- 3. Find the Biting Point and keep your feet still!
O Observe
Check all around, not forgetting your Blind Spots.
- Check: Left Blind Spot → Left Mirror → Centre → Right Mirror → Right Blind Spot.
- Decide if a signal is needed to help other road users.
M Move
Once safe, release the handbrake and move off smoothly.
- Release handbrake → Steer slightly away from kerb → Slowly release clutch fully as car gains speed.
Stopping Safely: MSM
When pulling up the side of the road, use the Mirrors-Signal-Manoeuvre routine:
1. Mirrors
Check Interior and Left Door mirrors to see if it's safe to move in.
2. Signal
Apply a left signal to inform others of your intention to stop.
3. Position
Steer gently towards the kerb, aiming for a parallel stop.
4. Brake & Clutch
Brake gently, then clutch down just before the car stops to avoid stalling.
💡
Instructor Pro Tip: To stop smoothly without a shudder, take your foot slightly off the brake just before the car comes to a complete halt. This takes a bit of practice, but you will soon master it!
FINISH: Handbrake On → Neutral → Cancel Signal → Feet Off Pedals
