🚗 How to Become a Driving Instructor
If you’re looking to become a driving instructor, the process is more achievable than you might think. To qualify, you’ll need to pass all three parts of the official DVSA driving instructor tests. With the right training and support, you can complete the process in just a few months. At Andrew’s Driving School, we offer comprehensive, structured training designed to help you succeed. From the moment you pass your first test, you’ll have up to two years to complete all three—and we’ll be with you every step of the way to make sure you stay on track.
🚗 How Long Does It Take to Become a Driving Instructor?
Most people qualify to become a driving instructor in 7 to 12 months, though some complete it in as little as six. Our flexible training is built to work around your current job or other commitments. Once you pass Part 1 (theory) and Part 2 (driving ability), you’ll have the chance to start working and earning as a trainee instructor. This not only provides valuable teaching experience but also helps you prepare for the final Part 3 test. As DVSA ORDIT-approved instructor trainers, we ensure your training is top-quality and fully compliant with national standards.
🚗 What Is a Trainee Licence?
A trainee driving instructor licence is issued by the DVSA and allows you to teach real learner drivers while preparing for your final test. To be eligible, you must complete at least 40 hours of instructor training and pass the first two qualification tests.
Although the trainee licence is optional, it’s a great opportunity to earn while you learn and build real experience before taking Part 3. And to make things even easier, Andrew’s Driving School will handle the entire application process for you, saving you time and reducing stress.

What Makes a Great Driving Instructor?
Reliability
As a driving instructor, your students rely on you to be consistent, show up on time, and follow through on your commitments. Being dependable is essential for building trust and maintaining a strong reputation.
⏰ Punctuality
Arriving on time for every lesson demonstrates professionalism and respect for your students’ time. Punctuality helps keep your schedule running smoothly and reflects well on your work ethic.
😎 Patience
Every learner progresses at a different pace, and some may find driving particularly challenging or stressful. Patience allows you to guide students calmly and supportively, creating a positive learning environment.
💯 Strong Customer Service Skills
Whether you’re self-employed or working with a driving school, excellent customer service is vital. Being approachable, professional, and responsive helps you retain students and build a strong client base through word-of-mouth and referrals.
🤓 Enjoy Working with People
Driving instruction involves working with individuals from all walks of life. If you enjoy meeting new people, adapting to different personalities, and helping others achieve their goals, this could be the perfect career path for you.
🚗 Full UK Driving Licence
To become a driving instructor, you must have held a full UK driving licence (or an approved equivalent) for at least three years.
🚘 Clean Driving Record
You must not have been banned from driving in the past five years and should have no more than five penalty points on your licence. A clean record is essential, as it reflects the safe, responsible behaviour you’ll be expected to teach.
🚗 Your Options once you qualify
We are committed to providing you with the highest quality training to become a successful driving instructor. That’s why all our training is delivered in-house by our experienced trainer, who is not only focused on helping you pass the required tests but also on ensuring you thrive in your career. Our goal is to help you become the kind of instructor that learners actively choose.
Once you’re qualified, the next step is up to you. You can choose to work independently or join a franchise. Naturally, we hope you’ll consider joining ours. We believe our franchise is the best in the UK, thanks to our strong reputation and the quality of our instructors. One major advantage of our popular driving school is that our instructors rarely need to travel far between lessons—resulting in more time behind the wheel and higher earnings.
To support your training, we also provide office-based classroom facilities alongside your in-car instruction.
Should you join our franchise, we ask for an initial 12-month commitment. After that, only four weeks’ notice is required to leave—quite different from many large national driving schools, which often require a full 12 months’ notice and charge around £200 per week.
Our franchise fee is less than half of that, and with the flexibility of a short notice period, it’s our responsibility to keep you satisfied by providing the level of work you need.
