How to Apply for a Provisional Driving Licence
Here we explain step by step how to apply for your provisional driving licence to help you get on the road quickly and easily.
Before you can take the wheel and start your driving journey, there are two essential requirements you need to fulfill.
- You will need to be at least 17 years old, or in some cases 16 if you get, or have applied for, the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment.
- You need to have your provisional driving licence, your driving instructor will not be able to allow you to drive without first seeing your provisional.
If you have any health conditions, or need to wear glasses, you must speak to your GP or optician to make sure you are safe to drive.

When can I Apply for My Provisional Driving Licence?
You can apply for your first provisional driving licence anytime from when you are 15 years and 9 months old. To apply for your first provisional licence, you need to complete the application form (Form D1) which you can get from your local Post Office or order online from Gov.uk. A much faster way is to apply online on the official Gov.uk site.
- Be able to read a number plate from 20 metres away.
- Be permitted to live in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) for at least 185 days.
You will need to prove your identity with some of the following documents
- UK passport (a passport that expired within the last 12 months can be used for this service)
- biometric residence permit
- biometric residence card
- national identity card
- your National Insurance number
- you may also be asked about addresses where you’ve lived over the last 3 years
Providing the correct information on your application will significantly speed up your application for your provisional licence.
