Doors

Check all doors (and the tailgate) are closed securely. Don't just rely on the dashboard warning light—listen for a firm "thud" and check that the door is flush with the car body in your side mirrors.

S

Seat & Steering

Adjust your seat so you can press the clutch (manual) or brake (automatic) all the way to the floor while maintaining a slight bend in your knee. Adjust the steering wheel height so you have a clear view of the speedometer.

  • Head Restraint: The firm part should be level with the top of your ears/head to prevent whiplash.
S

Steering Position

Check your reach: with your back against the seat, you should be able to rest your wrists on the top of the steering wheel without stretching. This ensures you have enough leverage to steer safely in an emergency.

S

Seatbelts

Check your belt is not twisted and clicks securely into the buckle. As the driver, you are legally responsible for any passengers aged 13 and under. Check they are buckled before moving off.

M

Mirrors

Adjust these last (because if you move your seat later, the mirror angles will be wrong).

  • Interior: Frame the entire rear window. Avoid touching the glass (hold the edges).
  • Exterior:Aim for a “horizon” split (50% sky, 50% road) with just a little bit of your car visible at the edge..
