Learning to Drive in Mold – Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to the most frequently asked questions about lessons  with Andrew’s Driving Wrexham

How does a first driving lesson usually go?

If it’s your very first driving lesson, your instructor will take you to a quiet area near Mold where you can get comfortable with the vehicle’s controls. You’ll be guided through the basics, including how to move off smoothly and bring the car to a safe stop. Learn more about your first driving lesson here.

How long should my first practical driving lesson be?

In Mold, a 90-minute driving lesson is often the most effective, as concentration can start to dip after that time. That said, the local roads offer plenty of learning opportunities, and a one-hour lesson can still be productive. Since Mold doesn’t have its own test centre, most learners will take their driving test in either Chester or Wrexham.

What do I need to have on hand for my first driving lesson?

At the start of your first lesson, please have your provisional driving licence ready for us to check. If you haven’t got one yet, you can apply for your provisional licence here. Aside from that, simply wear comfortable footwear — and you’ll be all set to begin!

Can I start driving lessons without passing the theory test?

You’re allowed to start driving lessons before passing your theory test, but you must pass it before you can book your practical driving test.

Do you offer any resources or support for the theory test?

Absolutely! Every student gets unlimited access to Theory Test Pro, a top-rated online platform packed with everything you need to confidently prepare for your theory test — included at no extra cost. You can learn more about our theory support here.

Where do I go to take the driving theory test?

Since Mold doesn’t have its own theory test centre, you’ll take your exam at one of the nearby DVSA centres: Chester or Wrexham.

Chester Theory Test Centre is located at Unit 3, Ground Floor, Granary Wharf, Steam Mill Street, CH3 5BE

Wrexham Theory Test Centre is found at Unit 7, Ground Floor, 3 Henblas Street, LL13 8AE

You’ll need to pass your theory test before booking your practical driving test—so make the most of your unlimited access to Theory Test Pro and get prepped well in advance!

What kind of roads should I expect during the driving test?

During your driving test in either Wrexham or Chester, you could be taken on any road that’s accessible within the 40-minute test window. This can include a mix of residential streets, busy urban roads, roundabouts, and even dual carriageways, depending on the area and traffic conditions. Your instructor will make sure you’re well-prepared by covering all the possible test routes during your lessons, so you’ll know exactly what to expect on the day.

We currently offer a selection of Wrexham and Chester driving test route videos, which are a great way to get familiar with the types of roads and junctions you might encounter during your test. We’ll be adding even more videos over the coming months, giving you plenty of visual support to boost your confidence and preparation.

Can I access more training materials online?

Certainly! We offer a variety of extra resources, such as practical guides and summaries of your driving lessons, to help you revisit important skills and grow your confidence between sessions.

Local Driving Tips for Learning Around Mold

Start your driving journey in Mold with our expert local instructors. At Andrew’s Driving School, we offer competitive lesson prices, hundreds of glowing 5-star reviews, and personalised tuition that’s tailored to your pace and comfort. We cater to Mold and nearby areas including Mynydd Isa and Sychdyn, helping learners of all levels — whether you’re brand new or sharpening existing skills — enjoy a smooth, stress-free path to test success.

If you are local to Mold, you’ll know the town centre can be a real challenge for drivers. Around High Street, King Street, and St Mary’s Church, narrow roads, sudden crossings, and parked cars demand constant attention. Add in the busy shopping traffic, and it’s the perfect place to sharpen your driving skills.

Our tip? Try starting during quieter times — early weekday mornings are perfect for building confidence. If you can’t manage those hours, no problem: our instructors know the best alternative routes to give you just the right challenge without overwhelming you.

Wednesdays and Saturdays are market days, which means extra pedestrians, more parked vehicles, and slower traffic — great for practising observation and clutch control. With regular practice on these streets, you’ll soon handle Mold’s quirks with ease, making every road beyond feel simpler by comparison.
